Weekend in Jordan! I haven’t counted them but this weekend was special again… Katja and I decided on the spot to go to the Dead Sea. We got up in the morning, had a nice breakfast and hit the road. It is only 45 minutes away and especially during morning as traffic is not bad yet. In Amman they announced 24 degree max today Saturday, at the Dead Sea we still had around 30. It was not like in Summer as there was a wind blowing. I don’t know if this can be called “chill factor” but indeed it felt a bit chilly but in the sun it was just gorgeous and it felt just fantastic. Not boiling hot anymore but just a nice awesome nice temperature. We sat on the beach, enjoyed a nice lunch and the beautiful view over the Dead Sea. Another advantage of going now to the Dead Sea is the people. It is kind of low season, therefore the beach is not crowded and the people who are there now are not the typical tourists (yelling and screaming and getting lobster red in the sun while drinking beer and smoking ;-) I don’t want to mention any nationality ;-)
I am always amazed by the beauty of this worldwide unique piece of earth… it is located at some 400 meter plus below sea level and the water is saturated with salt. It contains around 30% of salt. It is impossible to drawn and if you just walk in, you start to float. Today due to the wind we even had waves which made the experience even more fun. Floating while the waves lift you up and down :-) Another fun thing is the mud. There are big pots of mud close to the small bridges to the water. The bridges are needed as the rocks are all sharp and totally covered with sharp salt crystals or slippery. If you have a small injury, even the tinyest you don’t even feel anymore such as the one close to your fingernail…the water of the Dead Sea will make you feel it! Anyway, the mud seems to contain tons of minerals that are good for the skin. That’s why almost everybody covers himself with the brown mud. It looks so funny! After washing it off your skin really feels soft like silk. So it must be true that it helps…
These are rocks covered with salt on the shore of the Dead Sea. As the water is saturated with salt the salt crystalizes on the rocks and creates these awesone structures. Looks like sugar ;-)
The sun goes down quite early these days and at around 1630 the sun goes down and it is pitch black as if it was 2200 o’clock. Especially nice is the sunset these days. The whole horizon starts to get yellow, then amber until it gets into an always darker getting purple… a wonderful spectacle that you can enjoy, especially as there still are no clouds around.
We are all hoping for some rain coming soon, although I am scared of how the driving conditions will be after it rained… Streets are covered with dust which becomes a slippery thing when mixed with water... I'll keep you posted ;-)
Take care wherever you are in this world. Big hug from Amman!
