The Lodge is getting full ;-)

Last week was cool. Short week because of easter weekend, followed by long labor day weekend (I added another day and hada ultra long weekend). Really happened did nothing as we mostly hung out and enjoyed an easy nothing to do life.

I had my second dentist experience here and it was still good ;-) I had one moment during which I was not too comfortable and that was the moment when the dentist took the driller and started to drill without having asked me if I wanted to have a injection! He started and I thought that I'd stay calm until it starts hurting and would then say something...to my surprise it did not hurt! Explanation: He is a dentist and I am a lawyer ;-) on the X-ray he had seen that the tooth was root treated, means has no nerves anymore and without nerves there is nothing that can hurt! ;-) That's why he is a dentist and I am not...

Our lovely two friends arrived in the middle of the night two days ago. I went to pick them up and arrived just in time so that neither I nor them had to wait. After some twenty trips to the airport we start to get used to ;-) They slept in and got up around noon but of course not without anything happened There is ALWAYS something here... OK, here is the story: The evening before our guests arrived I took a shower and had the impression that the water pressure was not too exciting. I didn't pay too much attention as the pressure changes and isnot always stable. During the evening I remarked that the pressure was low on all tubs... hmmm, strange, but maybe it will recover by tomorrow. You need to understand how water supply works here: every apartment has water tanks on the roof. The tanks are attached to the public water supply. Depending in what area of the city you live, the water will be turned one very week (or two) for a certain period (e.g. 24 or 48 hrs). During that period your tanks hopefully got full and you manage to have enough water until the next round. If in the meantime you run out of water, means you used more than what your water tanks hold, you need to order a water truck. The truck will ring you as much water as you want but will charge you 3 to 5 times more. So when the pressure got lower and lower I thought that we did run out of water the first time since we are here and exactly before our guests got up to take a shower. So we try all faucets and all are dead! No water at all!...a short moment of panic came up ;-) but having spent now almost a year here makes you taking such things rather easy ;-) I called my man in the office who called my landlord. Iexplained my man in the office that the day before the person from the water authority came to read the meter and told me that they did not issue an invoice and I should call in to pay. I told him “Yes, bukkra, In sha' Allah!”not really considering to call. So the morning my western European part kicked in and I said to myself: ”Dammit, they already turned off the water because I didn't call!” but I then realized that would be almost impossibleto get that through so quickly and even if the water tank would still have been full... so in the meantime the landlord arrived and I heard him downstairs. I put a shirt on and run downstairs to welcome him. By the time I was down the problem was already fixed... The solution: the watertanks are on the roof and connected through pipes to a pump at ground floor. From there a pump pumps the water into the flat. That pump was just turned off and by pressing a button everything turned to normal... Lucky enough something that did not take four weeks... of course the landlord invited me to a coffee and cigarettes (No, thank you, I still do not smoke...” ;-) and we spent some 20 minutes which is considered to be polite. He then left (as he does not live here) and I returned upsatirs. Luckily enough our guests were still sleeping...

If you remember our shower wall in the guest bathroom smashed and we ordered a new one. In the meantime it is some four weeks ago and nobody showed up again... So I started the nagging tactic and asked every day twice where they were and if why the wall was not delivered. I did not complain with the vendor as I did not have the number and they do not speak English but was chasing “my man” at my office. Yes, the person who gets everything fixed already mentioned many times in our blogs... ;-) He got bored at the end and asked the first vendor to either show up the same day or to get lost. He chose the latter and so a new vendor was asked to show up. So exactly after I left the landlord the mobile rings and my man tells me that the vendor of the shower box was coming. When they tell you such things on the phone the person is either already standing in front of your door or you have to wait at least another hour until he calls you and asks for directions. Anyway, I open the door to the balcony and spot a person at the gate and assumed that that was the “shower-wall-man”. I hung up with my man thanking him for the help and run down. Before I run down I told Katja to wake up our two guests (both are female) and to hurry up as the guy from the shower box had to get to their bathroom to fix the wall. She opened the door and woke them up telling them that they had to clear the room asap as somebody was coming (sorry girls, I know, it was not the nicest first wake up...)

I arrived downstairs, open the gate and tell the guy:”Showerbox?!” You should have seen his face... WTF was the least he will have asked himself... He starts to speak in Arabic and I tell him that I do not speak Arabic (in Arabic ;-) and again I ask him about the showerbox. He still did not understand and I thought that this would be great fun to try to get a new box dealing with a vendor that does not speak any English. To make sure that I was not doing anything wrong, I called my man at the office and asked him to ask the person at the gate regarding the shower box. I gave him my mobile and they spoke a short moment and the gave me my mobile back and my man told me that that wasn't the showerbox-man! It was just a coincidence that he called when my man told me about the vendor! Imagine you ring a bell and somebody asks you about a showerbox out of the blue ;-) So the gentlemen (who was collecting money for something...) left and I went back upstairs. In the meantime the girls were up and I had to tell them that everything was a false alarm and that they could go back to bed if they wanted. They stayed up and took their shower (that worked thanks to my landlord ;-) They were not done when my mobile rings again and my man tells me that the showerbox man is at my house! So we had to tell them to make sure to clear the bathroom and to go and sit in the living room in order that the guy could go and measure the box... one of two was not really done and went to the second restroom while I asked the guy to get in and start measuring. I didn't want him to bump into our two female guests. He finished quite soon and left. Everybody was happy as the day started really hectic but on the other hand two things were solved! A very efficient day!

The ladies got up and we took a quick tour through East Amman (downtown) went back to a shopping mall to do our grocery shopping and started our first BBQ with our new guests :-)

As always... there is always something and the best thing here is to expect the unexpected!

Take good care wherever you are in this world! A big hug from Jordan!
